Product Review: Big Sexy Hair POWDER PLAY

Many times, innovative and “new-age” products are appealing at first but don’t deliver. We’ve seen this with multiple waxes, pastes and gels that have been transformed into [insert weird product name here] and boasted as the new, best, product on the shelf.

However, every now and then we find a different product that really delivers and adds edge to a product line-up, and that’s what I’ve found with Sexy Hair’s Powder Play. Tossed into the mix of “Big” Sexy Hair products, Powder Play is a volumizing and texturizing powder. It puts me in mind of dry shampoo (which I’ve never used because I find that a bit weird), and quickly disappears into hair, leaving no powdery residue or unsightly clumping. It almost feels cool or wet to the touch, but leaves hair dry and volumized instantly.

How to use: Simply apply at the root of dry hair and work into hair with fingers. You can also sprinkle through dry hair for added texture.

Cozy’s Complete Guide to Girls’ Hair

We recently stumbled across a great review of "Cozy’s Complete Guide to Girls’ Hair" book, which includes some incredibley cute hair styling ideas for young girls. We read the review on Flying Giggles and Lollipops blog, and had to share! She really gives a great review of the book, as well as where/how to buy! Would love to get our hands on a copy of this to check out. Sounds like a great buy for moms looking to mix up their morning routines and keep the kids smiling. Tis' the season... to get married, attend a wedding, be in a wedding, prepare for a wedding!

That's right, wedding season is at it's peak! June and July are hot (LITERALLY!) months for all-things wedding! While we could name thousands of Websites, magazines, books, blogs and shows that are targeted directly to the bride-to-be, what most of these fail to offer is the post-wedding advice. You know, the "don't-forget-to-remember-this-one-exact-second" advice, or the "when-it's-all-over-you-won't-remember-your-salad-dressing-but-you-will-remember-the-fillintheblankhere" advice.

Leading up to the wedding, the important thing [at that time] is to get everything lined up, from linens and flowers, to cake and dresses, but when it's all said and done, what was the ONE thing you wish you would have done, would have remembered, would have captured on camera, and so on?

Sometimes it's big things, and sometimes they're small. Either way, you can't press restart and you can't rehearse it for a do-over. It's happening once (hopefully!), and you can't do it again later or do it better next time, so needless to say, you hope to do it without regrets, or "would haves/should haves."

Sometimes you're caught up in such a whirlwind of planning, you forget that you won't get to plan with your bridal party later (or maybe it's the bridal party that forgets this), so if it hasn't happened already, it surely will not happen after the wedding--no need to plan for a wedding after the fact! And, you won't get to discuss fun details and talk through the planning with your family afterwards, when the rushing has ceased, because, well... it's over. You can't start to enjoy the excitement and anticipation of the wedding with family and friends after the fact!

So, tell us what you wish you would have paused to reflect on a bit more, planned a littler better for, appreciated more, or just enjoyed more.

Or better yet, what did you make an extra effort to do that you think made all the difference? What was the best thing you did for your big day, or leading up to it, that you'd recommend to every bride-to-be? What little details did you pay special attention to that you know look back and are so thankful for, because you would have never had the chance to do these things otherwise.

Give us your advice, because as you know, it's a wedding weekend EVERY weekend at Secrets of Hairdesign, and of course, EVERYONE knows SOMEONE that's planning for, or getting ready for that BIG DAY!

In many high schools, the pressure is off when it comes to finding that special someone to take to the prom.

Instead, teens are going to the prom in groups so big that they sometimes arrive in buses rather than limousines.

The trend is seen largely as a positive one, because it allows more kids to participate without the stress of finding a date or being part of a couple.

"They have definitely slid away from feeling that 'Oh my goodness, if I don't have a date, I can't go,' or 'If I'm not in love, I can't have a good time,'" said Louise Morgan, head of the Upper School at Mary Institute St. Louis Country Day School in Missouri (MICDS). Morgan estimated that 75 percent of the kids attend the prom in groups rather than as couples.

"The going-in-groups trend has allowed it to be more fun, more relaxed," she added. "Everything doesn't have to be romantically perfect like Cinderella.

"The way it used to be, when I've seen it in movies, is that the guy takes care of the girl and is expected to pay for the girl's ticket," said Adrienne Alair, a high school student who is going with a group of friends to her May 15 prom at the Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, N.C.

"I'm into the whole feminism thing," Adrienne added. "We buy our own ticket, go with a group of friends, and if you don't get a date, you can have fun anyway and not worry about it being a popularity contest."

Her mom, Moira Alair, said "it's so much better than when I was a kid, when the kids went mainly as couples. This way if you're not already in a dating relationship, there's no stigma. No one needs to be left out."

Blair O'Brien, a junior at MICDS, where the prom is traditionally attended by both juniors and seniors, went to the April 10 event with 21 friends.

"Some people had dates, some people went with a group," she said. "And it doesn't really matter who you dance with. It's a free-for-all."

Blair added that even though the couples tradition is on the decline, dressing up for prom remains a sacred rite.
"You're queen for a day," she said. "For girls, prom is an all-day event where you get your hair done, nails done, and constant pampering."

Missi Koebler, who owns Secrets of Hairdesign Salon and Day Spa in Butler, Pa., agreed, saying that she serves "a ton of prom-goers throughout prom season, and I've definitely noticed that most of our prom clients are following the trend of going in large groups. In fact, it's very rare that we hear of any of our girls heading off to prom with just their date. Most often, we hear a lot about large dinner parties and group activities before and after the prom."

Daniel Unger, now a freshman at California State University Northridge, attended his high school prom last year in Long Beach, Calif., with two other guys. He said part of why the couples tradition is going away is that "girls who don't find dates tend to hang in groups, which makes it very hard to ask them privately. The only alternative I saw for guy who did not have a date was to approach these groups and face public rejection."

Morgan and several other educators said the group dates create less pressure for sexual activity on prom night.
But some experts believe the trend toward attending proms in groups — which has been growing for over a decade — reflects a larger shift away from traditional dating patterns among high-school and college-age young people, with more casual hook-ups for sex and no effort to establish serious monogamous relationships.

"They are 'hanging out' as a group and indicating non-verbally their interest in each other," said Lissa Yogan, who teaches a class called "Sex and Society" at Valparaiso University in Indiana. "Several students have told me that dating is just too much work. They comment that it requires more emotional and time involvement, it is a financial hardship for some men and they often prefer the ease of doing things with friends and hooking up when they so desire."

Dating trends aside, going to the prom with a big group poses one major logistical challenge: transportation.
Blair's mother, Melody Walker, said her daughter's gang of 21 "had to rent a huge bus — all the stretch Hummers were taken by the time they got organized — to ferry them to dinner and the prom."

She added that "organizing dinner plans and transportation for a group of 21 is worse than herding cats.

"The complex logistics of crowd management actually make me long for a simple 'boy asks girl to prom' scenario where parents only have to worry about two teenagers dressing up and having a special evening."

That's Right... [Secrets] Know's Beauty & Style

It happens to all of us: A conservative day at the office leads straight into a spontaneous happy hour at your favorite bar. Or more perplexing fashion-wise, a hot date. Obviously, you need to change … or do you? Believe it or not, there are fabulously easy ways to adapt your look from day to night -- no additional wardrobe required!

Great bag
Sometimes all you need for a great evening look is a small cocktail bag: If night-time plans suddenly pop up, move from day to night by switching from a laptop bag to a more festive clutch.

Dress in Dresses
A recent survey by Cotton Incorporated found that 69 percent of women say they prefer to wear one comfortable outfit all day rather than change clothes to suit different activities. The survey also found that dress purchases were up 6 percent in 2009 compared with 2008 -- the only product that saw gains in consumer purchases in that period. What does that mean? Never feel the need to change your outfit if your plans change – just change the window dressing!

Leopard
Sometimes a bold accent like leopard is all you need to spice up that look. As the spring 2010 designer collections proved, leopard prints can be the perfect addition to a casual ensemble, from the subtle touch of a leopard belt or a lightweight, flowing scarf to a bolder option like a skirt. Everyone knows leopard is wonderful for a night on the town, but it can also be a daytime hit!

Hair
Master stylist and salon and spa owner Missi Koebler tells us every woman's best accessory is her hair. Create a hot summer look that works both day and night with just two tools -- bobby pins and hair spray. Before heading to work in the morning, pull your hair back as follows: Section off pieces, then pin each to the crown of your head, allowing the ends to do their own thing. Continue to work around to the back of your hair, pinning up more sections until you're done. The key to this look is not to have a particular plan, but just pin as you go, creating a fun but pulled-together look.

Once you have it all pinned up, simply spray into place, and go! After work, remove the pins, and you have instant, voluminous out-on-the town hair. (Grab a travel hairspray to keep in your purse, and you can spritz it on-the-go.)

Layers
Layers keep your look versatile. A great look for summer is white-on-white. Our suggestion: a ruched tank under a boyfriend jacket with a pair of cropped black pants and comfy flats for day. Remove the jacket, add jewelry and a floral silk scarf and slip into strappy high-heeled sandals for the evening look.

Great lips
Smoky eyes have been popular for a while, but if you want to get your look from day to night simply go for bold lips!
Red is red-hot right now, a classic color making a comeback in the fashion magazines and on the red carpet. For your summer look, find a shade that complements your skin tone, and you're ready for the evening.

Hair is HUGE

Check out some interesting stats from a recent study:

44% percent of women say their mood is effected by a bad hair day
1/4 of women have cried after a hair cut
1/3 have regretted changing their hairstyle

Really, ladies? This study is of just a little more than 1,000 women, so we're wondering if this is really an accurate reflection? Crying over a hair cut? Tell us your thoughts... Leave us a comment below if you agree with these numbers, or disagree?

Moreover, women cited the following as top hair issues:

"Women's biggest gripes about their hair in order: too thin or fine; the color; too curly or frizzy; too dry or damaged; too thick; takes too long to style; too straight; unmanageable; going gray; falling out."

Funny thing is--these are all things that can be easily managed/changed/altered through salon services? So, are the women that were polled just sitting at home crying about their hair? True Story: I Have Hair Extensions (and you should know the truth!)

It's likely you've heard a lot about Hair Extensions lately, and hopefully you've heard that they are now offered locally in Butler, PA at Secrets of Hairdesign***.

What you probably haven't heard anywhere is the nitty, gritty details of what it's like to actually wear extensions, care for them, and so on and so forth. So, as always, Beautiful Diction is bringing you just what you want... a behind-the-scenes look at what you can expect with hair extensions. The greatness of instant hair, and the truth about caring for extensions is at your finger tips, so sit back and read on...

Why am I qualified to clue you in on the truth about extensions? Well, I have what feels like 10 pounds of extensions attached to my pretty little strands, and quite frankly, I'm lovin' it!

Moreover, I’ve done it all. When it comes to hair, that is.

I’ve tried a few styles/colors...

· Tri-colored layers in red, black and blonde
· All-over-color, from summer-bleached-blonde, to a soft-brunette
· Chin-length, precision cut
· Ultra short and shaved in the back
· Fuchsia…enough said
· Long, non-dyed, no bangs
· Medium length, highlighted with bangs
· Highlighted/low-lighted, multi-dimensional color, from chocolate to platinum, and everything in between
· Blunt bob with bangs
· Layered bob with no bangs
· Bob with low-lights
· Clip-in extensions
· Blunt shoulder-length
· Layered shoulder length
· Razored, layered, shaved
· Ponytail, half-up, pinned-up, buns, braids, cornrows
· Curly, straight, messy and neat

So, what’s left to try after all of that? Well, not much, but you can bet when the opportunity arises to “change it up a bit,” I come running.

When Secrets of Hairdesign brought in Hair Extensions*** as a new service, I jumped right on it. Literally, days after bringing in the service, I had my hair ordered and my appointment made. The process was seamless:

· Set up a consultation to determine what texture/color is best for you.
· Choose the color/style that your stylist and you agree upon, order your wefts, and wait for the hair to arrive.
· Make an appointment for a mere hour or so time slot, and in less than two hours you have a whole new head of hot, hot hair!

Now, with all of that said, one thing I didn’t think about was life AFTER extensions. Yes, that’s right—this is life altering, people. muahaha The extension process was incredibly easy—Katie (Extension Specialist) knew exactly what she was doing and had the extensions placed beautifully, and finished it off with a nice cut to blend the new hair with my hair.

The Honest Truth Part: My head was indeed sore for a few days/nights due to the added weight or hair and strong-hold of the adhesive to my strands. As aforementioned, I’ve worn hair much longer than my extensions, but that was years ago, and it didn’t grow overnight! So, the weight of the added hair took a week or so to get used to--Not to mention I went from uber-short hair, to middle-of-the-back-long-locks--so I tend to become a bit overheated with all of this hair everywhere! :) I forgot what it felt like to have hair touch your neck! Again, this will take some getting-used-to again.

More importantly, it's so crucial that potential-extension-istas (that's my fab word for ladies looking to get extensions to pump up their 'fabulousness') realize that this is not hair you clip in (although, it could be if you're interested in clip-in hair...I was not...that's too much fussing for me!) and go. This hair is adhesive-attached to your strands (no harm done), and needs to be treated with TLC! This means no excessive, abusive brushing of your strands, no hot and steamy showers, and no blistering hot hair drying (like I said, this was life-altering for me). More or less, you need to wash your new locks-of-love in a cool (sort of freezing when you're used to scolding hot showers) water, highly conditioning the strands, but NOT allowing any type of oil or conditioner to hit the base of your head, where your extensions are attached. This means, carefully brushing your hair, and drying just your strands with normal heat, and then patiently blow drying your roots on the cool-setting of your hairdryer. You can't rush perfection, people!

The"greatness" Part: I instantly have the long, grown-out hair that I’ve been waiting on for months now! Everyone loves the look, I love that I got exactly what I wanted (Who doesn't love that?) in just over an hour... Can you say, "Goodbye awkward-growing-out-stage," and "Hello luxurious-full-long-va-va-voom-hair?!" I CAN!

All in all, I absolutely recommend extensions for those interested, not just in adding length to their mane, but also for those looking to add texture, fullness and volume. Whether you want your entire head done, or just a few to add some volume and “oomph,” I recommend you set up a consultation and talk through your options and exactly what you're looking for.

And remember, it’s just hair. Have some fun with it!

"I alway wanted Hair Extensions..How Much Are They, Anyway?"

Local salon, Secrets of Hairdesign & Day Spa recently added two new services: Hair Extensions and Airbrush Make Up! (More on the make up another day!) Extensions are not offered in most salons in the area, so we hear a similar sentiment from a lot of our clients, potential clients, friends and family, "I always wanted extensions, but how much do they cost anyway?"

First, the cost of any Hair Extension service varies, depending on hair type (real, synthetic) length (comes in various lengths, the longer the pricier), quantity (Full head, partial, just a few wefts) and many other variables, which are all added to the cost of the actual application of the extensions, or rather the labor of the service.

Secrets' Extension Service start at a base price of $350-$400. A final price is then calculated depending on the above variables. Secrets recommends setting up a consultation to determine what type of extensions would be suitable for you, and determining a price on the spot, so that you're not obligated to have the service, before you know the final price. It's a win/win either way! Yes, what you're thinking is correct--this is an incredible value for such a high-end service, but don't just "think," check it out for yourself on Costhelper.com:

The cost of hair extensions varies based on: the quality, type and length of hair extension chosen, the method of application and the length and density of the natural hair.

Typical costs:

Hair extensions typically cost between $150 and $300, plus the cost of the hair, for a partial head of extensions. Total cost ranges from $400 to $800.
Hair extensions typically cost between $300 and $600, plus the cost of the hair, for a full head of extensions for fullness only. Total cost ranges from $1,300 to $1,600.
Hair extensions typically costs $600 to $1500 and up, plus the cost of the hair, for a full head of extensions for fullness and added length. Total cost ranges from $1,600 to $4,000.

Some bonding techniques require regular application of a product to keep the bond in good shape, for about $20 per month.

Don't pretend that you don't know what it's like when you fit into your skinny jeans... nothing can turn your day sour when you're sporting your skinny jeans... right? Yes, that's right, and the same goes for a great hair style.

Oldy' but a Goody! "Great Hair Comes to Those Who Wait"

Good Morning, All!

We had so much positive feedback on this post last year, we decided to bring it back for those that missed it...the message of this post still rings true!

Fortunately and unfortunately, I’m in this business, but not in this business. As most of you know from either following us here, or knowing each of us on a personal level, I’ve grown up in the industry and developed my love for it through the salon and my ‘Ma,’ Missi.

I handle many-a-things salon-related, but not the hair- that’s where she comes in, and that’s why she’s the rock star of this show.With that said, there are days where I wish our roles were reversed.

Say, when a woman leaves her chair in tears because she’s “never felt so beautiful.” Yea, I wish I was her.

Or, when she puts out killer hair that leaves half the town wondering and asking, “Who cut your hair?” Yea, that has to be a good feeling.

Even more so, when I ask her to do anything and have to remind her for days before she even thinks about it. On those days, I wish our roles were reversed!

However, there are many-a-times, I thank the Lord that she’s the one in the seat, or behind it rather. Prom Day. Need I say more? Or, the infamous “change my look, but don’t cut or color my hair” appointments—I’d lose my mind. (If you haven’t gathered this quite yet- she carries her patience, compassion and heart on her sleeve…I carry mine in the bottom of my purse—just in case of an emergency.)

One of the most amazing things about her “role” as a stylist is her dedicated, loyal [and sometimes needy, although she would never say this] clientele.

After 25 years, she has a following many stylists could only pine for. She’s forever grateful for each and every client, but at times I think it’s still a bit overwhelming to even her.

Currently, a well-known fact in the salon is that it is indeed overwhelming for the assistants in the salon, as they have now become the recipients of this new type of client. That’s right; a new breed of clients are calling the salon: The “Irate-I-Want-My-Hair-Appointment-Today-Even-Though-I-Know-I-Normally-Schedule-Three-Months-in-Advance” client. Read on…

It’s apparently all the rage; Call a seasoned stylist that you know books appointments [solid] for three months in advance, but demand to have your hair cut tomorrow!

Now, it’s always interesting to answer a call from a new client requesting to get in her book. “I heard she’s the best around, and I want my hair cut tomorrow at 2 p.m.” Really? You hear she’s the best around, but you think she has an opening tomorrow? Seriously?

And then, when they decide to argue or bargain with you it gets so much better.“Well, what if I come in at 3, can she do me then?” WOMAN: She’s BOOKED. B-O-O-K-E-D…Can I spell it out any clearer for you? I’m not making it up. I’m not being mean. I’m not “joshing you around.” She’s booked. She’s booked for you. She’s booked for your sister. She’s booked for your Mom and your brother. She has not singled you out and decided that only YOU will not get an appointment until November- She’s honest-to-God booked!

Of course, I never get to say that [Don’t worry, Ma!] Before I can get out the words, “Actually, she’s booked then also,” the next question comes full force around the corner, “Well can’t she squeeze me in somewhere at the end of the day or something?” Naturally, I want to jump through the phone at this point. Sure, she can squeeze you in! Sure, she can stay late! Let me just see here, let me cancel her lunch. Oh wait, she doesn’t take a lunch. Ok, let me cancel her dinner for you. Oh wait, she doesn’t take a dinner break either. Oh, here, I know. Let me cancel anything remotely close to sleeping. There we go; she can indeed squeeze you in at 1 a.m.

The baffling aspect about this recent phenomenon is not the new clients calling. It’s her every-month-sat-in-her-chair-for-years clients. The ones who realize she is stretched to the ultimate lengths to maintain her 60+ hour work week, not to mention her household and family. These clients have faithfully scheduled to sit in her chair month after month, for years. Many clients schedule vacation time just to make their appointments, for fear that if they cancel it will be months before another appointment is available. Those faithful clients are the ones that rave about her, and in turn, those word-of-mouth referrals have loaded her appointment book.

So, why? Why all of a sudden are you calling and throwing royal fits about not getting in the exact day you want to be scheduled for? When you call to schedule your child’s dentist appointment do you demand the dentist stay late to accommodate your schedule? No! When you call your favorite restaurant and they don’t have a reservation time available for when you requested, do you ask them to call the chef and open early? No! When you call to schedule a surgery, of all things, do you demand the surgeon rearrange other patients in order to accommodate a time that’s best for you? Absolutely not!

So, why all of a sudden is your stylist supposed to put their life on hold because you don’t get off work until 4?

Clients, friends and consumers alike, work with your stylist. She’s most likely working more hours than the average woman and already stretching herself to the limit—just like the rest of you! So, while your hair is crucial to your stylist- it’s truly not of extreme importance that you get your bangs trimmed tonight.

To our Secrets Family, you must know how closely she holds each of you. The Secrets team does some extraordinary hair on some extraordinary clients. They truly would turn this world upside down to accommodate all of you…if there were only enough hours in the day!

Clothing Steamer – This was seriously on the list, but I don't recommend buying anyone a clothing steamer for Christmas unless they ask for it. Period. End of story.

New York...or BUST!

If you haven't heard...

The Secrets team ROCKED New York last weekend.

Buffalo, NY was the destination for our fun-filled, ultra-educational Paul Mitchell Co. Hair Show, featuring numerous, talented artists from their team.

Scott Cole, the guest artist for the show had great stage presence and show amazing talent, not to mention years of salon and platform experience to share.

This particular show touched on everything- from long/short, brown/blonde, fine/thick, highlights/chunks, hold the scissors this way, hold the scissors that way, cut with precision, cut like a crazy person....you get the idea.

Cole has worked in this industry for...well, as long as I have. As he began to show us various techniques I found that I was increasingly pleased, as I thought to myself, "This is us...this is what we do."

He reiterated many day-to-day ideas that we maintain in our salon, and techniques that we use and teach our apprentices every day.

Our team loves "custom cutting and coloring," meaning, there is not a "formula" or "haircut" that we are attempting to duplicate-- it's pure artistry.

Every single person that walks through our doors has their very own custom formula and/or cut. Now, don't misunderstand this-there is obviously a bob, shag, inverted bob (Boy, do we all know what that is!), and the long-layered look, but these concepts are the basis of some cuts--the ultimate result is exactly what we've designed for you-- our client.

Needless to say, We enjoyed watching Cole and his team show us various colors and styles that were specifically-designed for each and every model on stage.

As it concluded, the models cascaded down the center of the room. Each style created a personalized look--they had great confidence in themselves and what Cole and his team had done.

As we gathered in the back for a picture with Cole, I stood back for a minute and realized Scott Cole and I had a lot in common! ...We make people feel great and we have the perfect teams to do so!

Our weekend: Fantastic.

The education: Phenomenal.

Let's Get This Party Started...Again!

It's been a lifetime since our last post!

OK, it's really only been a little over a month, but in the blogosphere that's basically a lifetime.

What's been the hold up? Well, of course things are crazy-busy, and quite frankly, coming up with various topics within the constraints of the few topics we first decided to cover became a bit tough.

Once I vented out on all the topics I was really passionate about in the beauty industry and poked and prodded Ma to bust out a few posts of her own, I was left wondering, "What to post next?"

So, I resolved that instead of working so hard not to talk about some things in order to fit into this "Blog-mold," I've opted to break the mold and expand the topics of the blog.

So, I will update our profile information, and start posting about anything and everything that's on my mind... You were warned!

No worries...I'll still force Ma to come back with a guest post every now and then!

Product Review: Power Straight Straightening Balm

It's not a new product. It's not a new product line. So, why review a product that's been on shelves for some time now?

...Because it's THAT great.

That's right. As you know, our blog welcomes products and tools for review. However, every now and then, we come across a product, or we bring a product into the salon that needs no requests. Sexy Hair's Power Straight Straightening Balm is that kind of product.

Due to the easy access to products (and OK, maybe I tend to be a product junkie) I find myself jumping from product to product just for the fun of it, but I have my favorites. (Ask and I'll give you the top five...MUST HAVE products!)

I have naturally curly hair that I wear straight, and it's also cut uber-short momentarily; therefore, I have CRAZY hair unless I spend the time to blow it out and style it. (OK, those of you that know me know that I have crazy hair even when I do style it!) Naturally, I turn to straightening products to decrease the frizz and calm the curl, but also to make the hair-drying process less painful and time-consuming.

Most straightening products leave my fine, fine hair feeling heavy, and looking less-than-clean once the product settles in and weighs my hair down. However, Power Straight is one of the first products I've come across that truly straightens my hair, but doesn't weigh it down or leave it looking not flat and lifeless.

Curly or wavy-haired girls: I went to bed with wet hair, and wore it as is the next day! Seriously...

The apricot-vanilla scent also makes this a really fun product, but I do give the warning that too much of the balm (like any product) defeats the effects and will weigh hair down. So, don't get carried away!

I highly suggest this product for those of you with wavy-to-curly hair and fine-to-average textured hair.

Additionally, there is a whole line of Straight Sexy Hair products that accompany this balm.

Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific... too bad it's not clean

OK my little, styling gurus—Listen up:

A darling young man posed a very good question last week, which then prompted me to write!

(Good Lord, It's a Miracle! We should give that 'young man' a medal for getting her to write once again! --B)

He said, "Missi, do shampoos you buy at, like the grocery store and stuff, have a lot of wax in them, and is that bad?

Naturally, I responded, “Yes, as a matter of fact!”

One distinct difference between professional products and retail store hair products are the ingredients. As you may have guessed, hair care products sold in retail outlets are produced using cheaper ingredients, and usually have twice the fragrance, and are very much enhanced with waxes and/or plastics.

One of the main reasons for the inclusion of wax in hair products is to hold the fragrance in the hair. (Do you remember the product, Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific? For those of you that don't, I kid you not…you could smell that shampoo a mile away! One of my girlfriends had it, and I was so jealous—I think I was around 10 years-old, but thinking back, I bet you could have baked that shampoo and put a wick in it to make one sweet smelling candle!)

On that note, when assisting clients with product purchases in the salon they always have one main concern: “It has to smell good!” Now, I love clean, fresh scents as much as the next girl, but if we’re being completely honest, and really want to know—the best products made for your hair are not going to leave behind an abundance of fragrance.

Professional products sold in the salon are made specifically to benefit the health and integrity of your hair—not load it down with fillers, fragrance and wax.

With that said, when using non-professional products, or those you buy at your local grocery store, you could run into issues after prolonged use. Wax can cause significant build-up on your hair, leaving it heavily coated, and in turn, dull and flat. Furthermore, this can cause additional problems with your hair color, highlights, permanent waves, texture services, and other services, for which results are dependent on the quality of your hair. If you’re having issues with your color holding, your perm taking, or other services not reaching their full potential on your hair—ask your stylist about this, or even better, think about what products you’re regularly using on your hair—that’s most likely the answer.

Switching to professional products and with the regular use of professional products, you will see significant changes in the quality of your hair, and your services. In my salon we even recommend that you don’t use the same professional product continually, but rather, “switch it up” every couple visits. We encourage our clients to make it a rule to not buy the same product twice in a row.

Also, for individuals that use a lot of styling products, I always encourage them to have a high-quality, custom shampoo (color-treated, moisturizing, curly, straight, etc.), and most importantly, a clarifying shampoo to use once a week to avoid product build up on their hair. Yes, your styling products (gel, mousse, hair spray, etc.) can and do build up on your hair. This is normal, but for Heaven’s sake—you shouldn't have to worry about your shampoo building up on your hair! Besides, even the best styling products are not going to do a thing for you if your hair if it is coated with wax build-up from your cheap (not affordable—just cheap) shampoo.

So, if nothing else, at least take this last tidbit away from all of this…If you’re visiting a reputable salon and paying competitive prices for beautiful color and texture services, use products (color-treated hair products, chemical-treated hair products, etc.) that are going to enhance and maintain your hair--not derail your efforts!

And of course, I have to leave you with one last thing…

"Would you wash your dry clean-only clothes with generic laundry soap?" …I think not!

Guess Why There Hasn't Been a Blog Since Aug. 4... She's "Expressive"

After going through a leadership training at work yesterday, I stumbled across the obvious: my social profile assessment declared me very analytical...as in, there-is-no-mistaking-you-for-anything-other-because-your-so-damn-practical analytical.

Apparently, Analytical individuals "live life according to the facts, principles, logic and consistency one can find in reality. (This sounds totally logical...) People with Analytical styles tend to behave in ways which fit into their overall theory and ideas about the world. Others may view them as lacking enthusiasm or appearing cold and detached. They project the image of good planners, organizers and problem solvers with the ability to work out tasks systematically. Because of their apparent concern for facts, logic and serious organization of thought, coupled with a desire to be "right," (What a coincidence..I'm always right!) Analytical individuals often display a reluctance to declare a point of view. They have a need to analyze all significant possibilities in an attempt to avoid any chance of making illogical or inconsistent decisions. A faith in principles appears to assume greater importance than personal friendships or personal gratification to an Analytical Style." (I sound like a total ball of fun, eh?)

Now, I bring all of this up because our presenter then went on to share with us that one of the more difficult people for me to work with would be someone with an Expressive social style. Expressive being, someone who focuses "their attentions on the future with intuitive visions and outspoken spontaneity. They can be seen as imaginative and creative as they interact with others. Expressives can generate enthusiasm. Their behavior can be intensely stimulating, exciting and fun for those who get caught up in the Expressive’s dreams. They tend to make decisions quickly based on how they feel about a situation. They appear warm and approachable, yet competitive for recognition and involvement in relationships. Some see the Expressive’s behavior as flighty, impractical and overly emotional. Because of their desire to act on opinions, hunches and intuitions rather than hard facts, Expressive behavior can lead to mistakes and frequent changes of direction."

So, I started to think...OK, that's a lie. A blaring alarm went off in my head, no thinking occurred...it was immediately obvious: MA IS AN EXPRESSIVE. No wonder I practically have to tie her down and spoon feed her in order to get her to write a blog! She loves writing and she's a great writer, but she won't give me five seconds of her attention to actually write a post... Good Lord!

I decided this new found information was relevant to post because I wanted all our readers to know why there hasn't been a post from her since July 16! That's right...because she's an Expressive! After I posted the last blog entry on Aug.4 I declared that she MUST write something-- she has so much to say-- SO WRITE IT! And, here we are on August 19 without a single blog entry from her.

As for what she's going to write about, she's decided on topics and changed her mind about 300 times. I've suggested numerous topics, and those are all "boring." (Me...boring?)

So, folks...maybe you should all start e-mailing her (melissa@secretsofhairdesign.com ...Yes, I'm totally serious...e-mail her right now) and demand that she sits still for 3 whole minutes and writes SOMETHING.

Great Hair Comes to those who WAIT

Fortunately and unfortunately, I’m in this business, but not in this business. As most of you know from either following us here, or knowing each of us on a personal level, I’ve grown up in the industry and developed my love for it through the salon and my ‘Ma,’ Missi. I handle many-a-things salon-related, but not the hair- that’s where she comes in, and that’s why she’s the rock star of this show.

With that said, there are days where I wish our roles were reversed. Say, when a woman leaves her chair in tears because she’s “never felt so beautiful.” Yea, I wish I was her. Or, when she puts out killer hair that leaves half the town wondering and asking, “Who cut your hair?” Yea, that has to be a good feeling. Even more so, when I ask her to do anything and have to remind her for days before she even thinks about it. On those days, I wish our roles were reversed!

However, there are many-a-times, I thank the Lord that she’s the one in the seat, or behind it rather. Prom Day. Need I say more? Or, the infamous “change my look, but don’t cut or color my hair” appointments—I’d lose my mind. (If you haven’t gathered this quite yet- she carries her patience, compassion and heart on her sleeve…I carry mine in the bottom of my purse—just in case of an emergency.)

One of the most amazing things about her “role” as a stylist is her dedicated, loyal [and sometimes needy, although she would never say this] clientele. After 25 years, she has a following many stylists could only pine for. She’s forever grateful for each and every client, but at times I think it’s still a bit overwhelming to even her.

Currently, a well-known fact in the salon is that it is indeed overwhelming for the assistants in the salon, as they have now become the recipients of this new type of client. That’s right; a new breed of clients are calling the salon: The “Irate-I-Want-My-Hair-Appointment-Today-Even-Though-I-Know-I-Normally-Schedule-Three-Months-in-Advance” client. Read on…

It’s apparently all the rage; Call a seasoned stylist that you know books appointments [solid] for three months in advance, but demand to have your hair cut tomorrow!

Now, it’s always interesting to answer a call from a new client requesting to get in her book. “I heard she’s the best around, and I want my hair cut tomorrow at 2 p.m.”

Really? You hear she’s the best around, but you think she has an opening tomorrow? Seriously?

And then, when they decide to argue or bargain with you it gets so much better.

“Well, what if I come in at 3, can she do me then?”

WOMAN: She’s BOOKED. B-O-O-K-E-D…Can I spell it out any clearer for you? I’m not making it up. I’m not being mean. I’m not “joshing you around.” She’s booked. She’s booked for you. She’s booked for your sister. She’s booked for your Mom and your brother. She has not singled you out and decided that only YOU will not get an appointment until November- She’s honest-to-God booked!

Of course, I never get to say that [Don’t worry, Ma!]

Before I can get out the words, “Actually, she’s booked then also,” the next question comes full force around the corner, “Well can’t she squeeze me in somewhere at the end of the day or something?”

Naturally, I want to jump through the phone at this point.

Sure, she can squeeze you in! Sure, she can stay late! Let me just see here, let me cancel her lunch. Oh wait, she doesn’t take a lunch. Ok, let me cancel her dinner for you. Oh wait, she doesn’t take a dinner break either. Oh, here, I know. Let me cancel anything remotely close to sleeping. There we go; she can indeed squeeze you in at 1 a.m.

The baffling aspect about this recent phenomenon is not the new clients calling, however. It’s her every-month-sat-in-her-chair-for-years clients. The ones who realize she is stretched to the ultimate lengths to maintain her 60+ hour work week, not to mention her household and family. These clients have faithfully scheduled to sit in her chair month after month, for years. Many clients schedule vacation time just to make their appointments; for fear that if they cancel it will be months before another appointment is available. Those faithful clients are the ones that rave about her, and in turn, those word-of-mouth referrals have loaded her appointment book.

So, why? Why all of a sudden are you calling and throwing royal fits about not getting in the exact day you want to be scheduled for? When you call to schedule your child’s dentist appointment do you demand the dentist stay late to accommodate your schedule? No! When you call your favorite restaurant and they don’t have any reservations for the time you requested, do you ask them to call the chef and open early? No! When you call to schedule a surgery, of all things, do you demand the surgeon rearrange other patients in order to accommodate a time that’s best for you? Absolutely not!

So, why all of a sudden is your stylist supposed to put their life on hold because you don’t get off work until 4?

Clients, friends and consumers alike, work with your stylist. She’s most likely working more hours than the average woman and already stretching herself to the limit—just like the rest of you! So, while your hair is crucial to your stylist- it’s truly not of extreme importance that you get your bangs trimmed tonight.

To our Secrets Family, you must know how closely she holds each of you. The Secrets team does some extraordinary hair on some extraordinary clients. They truly would turn this world upside down to accommodate all of you…if there were only enough hours in the day! Hang in there—Good [hair] comes to those who wait, and great [hair] comes to those who wait longer.

Consumer Ignorance: The Demise of the Beauty Industry's Retail

Diversion: What industry professionals are screaming about and consumers haven’t even heard about

What’s the biggest issue surrounding product diversion?

Is it that consumers are purchasing outdated, bacteria-latent products, or most often they are being overcharged for hair care products when purchased outside of the salon? Is it that the sale of these products in mass retail stores, drug stores and other discount outlets is hindering the retail aspect of the salon industry?

The aforementioned are all prevalent; however, the most significant issue surrounding product diversion is the fact that most consumers have absolutely no idea what it even is.

Ask your clients, or ask your friends, and you will here the same response every time, “I’ve never even heard of diversion.”

Diversion, simply put, is when products are diverted from the shelves of your local salon and sold in unauthorized outlets.

The grey area of this issue is that it is not illegal for these products to be sold in retail stores, drug stores, grocery stores and discount stores; however, contracts are broken and these products never come straight from the manufacturer. Meaning, every product you purchase anywhere other than your salon is absolutely not guaranteed- no safety guarantees, no guarantee that it’s more affordable, and certainly no guarantee that it is even the real product.

“It is important that as salon owners we make the public aware of what is going on in this industry. The public, and even those that frequent salons and spas, are tempted by the sale of salon-only products in supermarkets and drug stores,” said Koebler, owner of Secrets of Hairdesign and Day Spa (Secrets) in Butler, Pa. “What these individuals do not realize is that the sale of these products outside of a salon is part of a ‘grey market.’ These products are often old, outdated or counterfeit.”

A well-known fact is that the number one reason salon-goers purchase professional hair care products outside of a professional salon is to “save money.” Ironically, the products on the shelves of your local retailer, grocery, or drug stores are most often marked up compared to the products you will find at your local salon.

In fact, after comparing the current price list of Secrets in-salon products to two drug store chains* and one major retail store* we found the following:

It is evident that consumers are not saving money by purchasing products outside of the salon, but they are risking the quality of their products to save less than a dollar in the rare instances that they can find a “better deal.”

FOX News conducted independent lab tests on products purchased from various mass retailers and grocery stores, and according to the Paul Mitchell® Web site, the test results showed that there was “enough bacteria that would make the user sick enough to require medical attention.”

Paul Mitchell® is a well-known professional hair care line that actively fights against diversion in the hair care industry. According to their Product Control Web page, “The products found in grocery stores, drug stores or on the internet are either diverted, stolen, old, tampered with or counterfeit. The only way to guarantee that professional salon product is genuine is to buy it at a professional hair salon.”

If this were any other product, consumers would be extremely hesitant to purchase any item that had been stolen, was outdated or counterfeit, yet consumers continue to purchase their products outside of the salon.

Would you purchase lunch meat that you knew had landed in the store by way of diversion? Would you purchase vitamins knowing they were most likely outdated, having passed through an unknown, unauthorized middleman before ending up in the store?

Bottom line: The purchasing of hair care products outside of the salon is extremely hazardous…to the consumer and the industry as a whole. This “grey market” is hindering the integrity of the industry, which in turn, will significantly affect every salon and stylist.

As stylists, you must educate your clients about diversion. Do not hesitate to bring it up when your client is sitting in your chair. Your clients are the consumers of these products and they deserve to know the whole story.

Consumers: You must be aware of the illegitimate products you are bringing into your home, the risks you are taking with these purchases, and the affect your purchases are having on an entire industry.

Speaking of Cutting Back...

Just yesterday, I had a client begging me to forgive her because she cut her bangs…again! (Stylists: You know this routine!)

Clients I've had for a lifetime, my most loyal ladies, insist on trimming their bangs.

Now, I always tell my clients, "It's ok. It's your hair, so you can do whatever you want!" (Note from B: She also told my siblings and I the same thing, except it sounded more like, "It's your hair, so do what you will, but I'm not fixing it!")

With that said, when you’ve used your razor, cuticle nippers, craft scissors, or even those little surgical scissors to just "trim a bit off," don’t act surprised that they closely resemble a kindergartners attempt at trimming their own bangs. Better yet, they most often resemble what our bangs looked like when Mom would use the pinking shears to give us a "trim."

The real problem? You still have a killer cut and style, but your bangs are doing the wild thing… I can hear the conversation now,

" I love the...back... of your hair."

“Oh, why yes! Missi cuts my hair!" (Disclaimer: Missi did not do that!)

Now, the economic tie-in. I realize that right now every little bit helps, cutting back here, trimming the budget there, but next time you pick up your husbands razor to "trim a bit off" keep in mind that your hairstylist is just a call away, and would be happy to “trim a bit off” and still maintain your hair cut.

Moral of today’s blog?

Cutting back is ok, but let your stylist do the cutting!

"I'm growing my hair out so that I can pull it up."

There are many, many times in the course of a typical work week that terms, phrases and general beliefs are presented to me by my clients, old and new.

One very common, but still prevalent question is, "Will trimming my hair regularly make it grow faster?" Now, most stylists would quickly answer, "No." However, in short, I would say, "Yes." Why? A regular trim removes the split ends, thus not allowing further breakage. As a result you will see growth.

Another popular question: "Will coloring or highlighting my hair damage it?" My answer: Yes, of course it will! Blow drying, brushing, and even excessive shampooing can and will damage your hair. So, any time a chemical process is performed on your hair it does in fact compromise the integrity of your mane. At any rate, your hairstylist knows this and should know exactly what your hair can and will endure. Further, this is why they make specific shampoos, conditions, and treatments for color treated hair.

Now, my personal favorite (Sorry B, I had to include this) isn't even a question. In fact, it's a simple statement that I hear so often. "I need to leave it long so that I can pull it up." Sometimes it comes in the form of, "I'm growing my hair out so that I can wear it up," or "I need it cut, but make sure I can still wear it in a ponytail."

Ok, now let's ponder this: You're letting it grow or leaving it long, so that you can "pull it up?" No one will ever know how long your hair actually is because you always have it pulled up. Ask these individuals how often they wear it up, and most will say nearly 85 percent of the time their hair is pulled back or worn up. Now, those who claim it's easier...really? You have to wash it, blow dry it (Don't tell me you pull your hair up wet...have you heard the term, "Mildew?"), and then put it up. Now, I realize some of you may think- "She has short hair, she loves short hair, of course she'd say wear short hair!" Truth is, I wore long hair (Note from B: Incredibly long, can you say 80s?) for years, and I loved it too. However, be honest, and make it easy on yourself. Claiming to keep long hair so that you can pull it up is like saying "I need to buy a steak, so I can grind it up to make a hamburger."

Ha- B warned you about my metaphors.

"Write your blog woman!"

That's what I have heard for, oh, about a week now. "What the heck is a blog?" That was my initial question was for B. So, she went on to explain why I needed to blog. So, as always, I proceeded.

Although, I told her she already told you everything... I'm Missi- The Mom- The Hairstylist- The Salon Owner- and now, The Blog Writer! B is my beautiful, talented daughter that you can learn so much from. She is just about done raising her Dad and I, and before long I'm very sure she will be raising a child of her own.

Since B was a child and even before that I have been a hairstylist. In fact, I have been at it for more than half my life. With just a year or so break to have her younger sister, Jasmin and younger brother, Dalton, I have been working in the beauty business, on beautiful people, for over 25 years! There is only one way for me to describe it- I love it! I love to do hair, and I always have. I didn't, as a many people do, set out to own my own business. In fact, I never thought of it seriously until I became unhappy in the salon I was working in. At that point, it became evident to me that there was only one thing to do... open my own salon.

Over six years ago I opened the doors to my salon. I love my salon. Of course, it has ups and downs, ins and outs, but all and all, if i had it all to do over-- I would do it again!

I believe that B thought we should "blog" so that we can share all of the experiences that we encounter in, out and around the salon, and also our lives. Or, maybe, just maybe, she gets tired of me bending her ear about "not so pleasant" parts of the industry and business.

So, join us on our "blogging" journey, as I hope we can educate, inspire, or if nothing else, simply entertain you!

Hello World: Meet... our Blog!

Welcome!

You're reading the first post for the Beautiful Diction blog, authored by myself and Missi aka "Mom." (Check out the About Us section.) This blog is intended to be a fun, creative outlet for both of us to sound off on aspects of the salon/beauty industry and related topics, as well as product reviews.

If you haven't put two and two together yet about the title of our blog, the reasoning is as follows: the term Beautiful (having beauty; having qualities that give great pleasure or satisfaction to see, hear, think about, etc.; delighting the senses or mind) represents my mother's end of the story (obviously because she's beautiful, I know, Awhh...) because the beauty industry is a huge part of her (and our family's) life. Diction (style of speaking or writing as dependent upon choice of words), in turn, is my end. I love writing, reading, words, poetry, non-fiction prose, and everything in between. Read on, and I'll explain the rest...

After working as a stylist for 25+ years, my mother decided to open her own salon nearly 7 years ago. Since Secrets of Hairdesign & Day Spa's debut, the salon has become one of the finest salons in the area, serving as a full service salon and day spa to Butler, PA and the surrounding communities.

During the opening and introduction of the salon, my interest in the creative arts and writing (and Mom's need for a little assistance in kicking things off) led me to volunteer myself as the "event planner" and designer/producer of business documents/signage for the salon. Recently, I earned my Bachelor's in Mass Media Arts and Journalism, with a concentration in Public Relations; therefore, I have permanently taken on the position as the Creative Director and Webmaster of Secrets.

We pride the salon in being one of the the most technologically-linked businesses in the area. I feel it is crucial to stay connected with our clients on various levels... ever hear the phrase, "Out of sight, out of mind?" That's so not Secrets. Our clients are a part of our salon family; therefore, we like to maintain contact day in and day out, not just at appointment time! We Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, and now, we blog. Any and every business that intends to climb the ladder of success must keep up with these forms of interaction. You can't skip over the "technological rungs" and expect to keep climbing. (Mom, I know you're loving that one! Warning: This woman loves metaphors. The cheesier the better.)
